When booking our trip to Italy, we absolutely knew from day one that we wanted to do the Amalfi Coast. It is a place that I have always dreamed of visiting, and with a baby, it seemed more doable to us for some reason. Though we originally hoped to hit the major cities in Northern Italy (Florence, Venice, etc) the idea of touring those cities with a baby seemed less appealing than the cities on the water. Too hot and sticky maybe? Either way, we decided on the Amalfi Coast over Cinque Terre this time and picked our destinations from there.
What is lovely about Italy is that you can do so many day trips. Everything is so easily accessible and close by. The first city we chose to visit on the Amalfi Coast was Sorrento. Sorrento is a sweet little town on the Southern Coast of Italy. It has a cute downtown area as well as lots of narrow, winding side streets full of shops and gelaterias.
The hotel we stayed at in Sorrento was called Bellevue Syrene. This place was magical. From the unbeatable sunset view, the terrace overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the beautiful, bright artwork and italian glass chandeliers, this hotel was everything and more. The staff was beyond friendly and the hospitality was excellent. It is definitely worth stopping at for a sunset cocktail if you ever find yourself in Sorrento :)
The best part about Capri is that it is a super easy destination for a day trip and you can get there from several cities on the Amalfi Coast. We tacked on an extra day in Sorrento so that we could rent a boat and hit up Capri. BEST DECISION. Capri is absolutely amazing. I loved every second of it from the boat ride over, exploring the island, to all of the grottos (caves).
We ended up renting a private boat through a friend of a friend and we had the most fabulous day. Our captain and his girlfriend quickly became our friends, and what was supposed to be a half day tour turned into a full day/borderline sunset cruise. They were the sweetest people and taught us all there is to know about Capri and the surrounding areas. Tons of nespole (best.fruit.ever.), prosecco & lovely conversation lead to the perfect day. Fox even developed his first official crush on a lovely brazilian model named Mary (our captain's gf).
Ciao, Capri! (*note- this mystery swimmer puts the biggest smile on my face!) Capri is one of the coolest places I have ever been. Picture Rodeo Drive mixed with Santorini, Greece. It is all pristine with gorgeous white buildings and colorful flowers, but with the highest of high end designer stores imaginable. Hermès, Gucci, Prada, Chanel, Bvlgaria, Dolce & Gabbana...you name it & it was there. It was a super fun place to walk around and dream. It's probably a good thing we had a baby with us-- he stopped us from being able to get lost in all of the stores!
The Amalfi Coast is truly a dream world. If ever planning a trip here, I would highly recommend starting out in Sorrento and doing a day trip to Capri. Our only regret was that we did not get to do the Blue Grotto (the one time on our entire trip that we were held back by having an infant.) but I can assure you, we will be back. Next up on our #polltalia adventure: Positano!
